GPS Topo Map User Comments

I’m happy to report that the Above the Timber ‘s Colorado GPS Topo Maps are way easier to use than  the others I have tried! I have just purchased Garmin’s  2008 TOPO U.S. 2008 software. Owning both, I can make a reasonable comparison.

It is important to note that although I am favorably impressed with the newest Garmin product - for my use here in Colorado, Above the Timber maps will be the one I use. In fairness to Garmin, they cover a very large area of our U.S.A.

A.B.T has ALL roads clearly shown in the visual presentation. Since we explorers frequently arrive at our walking tour via county roads, 4 wheel drive roads, and “other,” having the ability to quickly distinguish two track paths is very comforting! I had to go to the highest possible magnification on my computer, to find County Road 9 (also known as Shelf Road,) on Garmin’s newest set of TOPO maps. Not so with the “Above the Timber” set. Roads, however minor, are shown in high contrast red, making it easy to keep track of them.

Since I plan my walks frequently on my home computer or GPS, Above the Timber’s ease of use and high resolution make it a strong “first choice” for me.

Above the Timber, I’m glad you’re here!

I am totally pleased with your Colorado High Resolution Maps for my Garmin GPS! Yesterday I met with the head of Colorado Cave Survey, along with his team and a group from the new Grotto at Canon City. The idea was to show them a cave I discovered, dig out some blocked passages, and hunt for other entrances (all in one day.)

With your map set, I could sit at the cave entrance, and without a huge piece of paper flapping in the wind – determine the topography in the area. We needed that advantage, because the debris in the cave was water borne and that gave us clues where to look.

We could have wandered about aimlessly, or taken coordinates and gone home to a large kitchen table, large sheets of 7.5 degree maps, calculators, calipers, rulers and magnifying classes. Instead, we were able to push a few buttons and see as much detail as needed on the area topography. We were able to concentrate our search and be productive in a few hours!

Today, I got the coordinates and tried plotting them on 7.5 minute USGS maps. After three hours at the kitchen table, I was not able to pinpoint the cave opening on the USGS map, and could not identify the topography which we actually walked through! Your maps have obviously been updated several times since the paper sheets I just bought! On your maps - the topography is recognizable and makes a lot of sense. I find it much easier to see the detail I want on your maps, than on a USGS 7.5 minute series map!

In short, using the maps from Above the Timber, I saved time, saved lots of money, accomplished a task in a few hours instead of weeks, and got superior results.

I have always believed that computers should work for us, not the reverse. With your map set in a Garmin GPS unit, it is cutting edge technology making life pleasant.

Your maps have opened up an area of recreation I never dreamed of.

Thanks,  Art Owens - Colorado Springs - June 18, 2007
