Utah Map Features (click for details)

40-Foot Contours:

Above the Timber's Utah contours are at 40-foot intervals, the same as standard 7.5-minute USGS Quad maps. The multi-layer nature of the maps automatically drops contours as you zoom out to avoid overwhelming the map with too much detail.

Latest  Roads:

Major state and federal highways shown in distinct colors and with unique shields for quick identification. All city streets are included, while not routable, the road features greatly aid navigation. Back country roads are shown at all but the least detailed zoom level giving the viewer the ability to see the big picture.

30-minute Coverage per Map:

Each map segment covers an area of 30x30 minutes of arc or exactly 16 - 7.5 minute Quad Maps. These maps seamlessly join one to another, therefore you can have the entire state as one seamless map inside your GPS receiver. Their are in total 93 map segments in the Utah map set, ranging in size from 400KB to 5.4MB. The total map set is 227 MB on your flash card.

Covers ALL of Utah:

Public Lands in Unique Colors:

Virtually all Utah public lands are included on these maps and most have a unique color for quick identification. If you are unsure of the area color, simply touch it with the cursor for a quick detailed description, no legend required. See the map above: USFS=middle green, NPS=lime green, BLM=dirty orange, Wilderness=Buff, Military=Olive, State=Purple, Indian Reservations=Buff. Of note, Utah is 90% public lands, only the white areas above are private.

The version 2.0 maps are a start from scratch 24K or better land area dataset, verses an unknown dataset in version 1.0. An example of the precision are roads in wilderness, a ribbon of non-wilderness land almost always underlies these roads that is no more than twice the width of the twin track. The effort required to create these land areas is extraordinary. The precision is all the more remarkable because the roads and land areas underneath are from different federal agencies. Also, the v2.0 maps show the numerous BLM wilderness and wilderness study areas added in the last ten years, verses simply shown as BLM in v1.0. An example of all these new features can be seen in the sample download map.

Extensive Geologic Feature Points:

Their are over 30,000 points of interest showing summits, mines, cemeteries, arches, pillars, basins, springs, flats, ridges, cliffs, waterfalls, communication towers, passes and on and on.

National Park, Forest Service and BLM Trails:

The red dashed line for trails shows well against all backgrounds.

High Resolution Water Data:

Besides the contour interval, the High Resolution Water Data is what makes these maps stand out. Most vector maps only have named water features, named lakes and streams. For every named water feature, their are 100-unnamed water features. To the extent possible with USGS water feature databases, ALL unnamed water features are on these maps. We're talking beaver pond resolution!!!  Additionally, most Utah rivers are shown at their true extent, bank to bank, not just a line indicating river. Irrigation ditches and canals are shown with a unique color from streams. River rapids have a unique pattern so rafters can know what's ahead.

Ski Lifts:

Every Utah ski lift is shown in a unique ski lift line type. Each lift is described as follows: Name, Capacity, Elevation Gain, Type and Sub-Type.

Wildlife Management Unit Borders:

Wildlife Management Unit borders have been added at the 24:000 to 1 scale of the maps. Significantly more precision than any PDF print or text description. See your exact position relative to a WMU border in the field, then use your GPS to measure how far away the border is from your position. All border lines are labeled with the adjacent area numbers, for quick reference. See here for another screenshot.

Free Trial Download:

Here's a 1 MB file which will demonstrate all the features of the Utah map set. It shows most road types, rivers and streams, wilderness, BLM, state, national forest, and national park lands. It is in a self-extracting executable file. The map will appear in Mapsource or Basecamp as Utah Topo Demo and you can load it into any Garmin mapping GPS. If you're new to Mapsource, these screenshots will help immensely. You can also use this download to verify that Above the Timber's maps will work in your Garmin GPS receiver.

PC Download  A link to download a compatible version of Mapsource is included in the PC file.

Screenshots:

A detailed wide view to the Colorado River. Wilderness areas are shown in this buff color to both distinguish them from forest,
but also that the color not overwhelm the fine detail.

Typical Wilderness Wide Detail, trails, red dashed line, are now easy to see against the contours.
